Robbie and Michelle Gale

Owners and Managing Directors

Born and bred in Hawkes Bay, Robbie and Michelle are the fiercely compassionate and innovative leaders who steer the dynamic ship that is - Russell Roads.

Having run the largely successful concreting business ‘CPM’, in 2015 the pair decided to partner and merge their company with Russell Roads. Their vision was to become a ‘full service’ civil construction company who delivered high-quality outcomes for its clients and its people.

Over the last five years, they invested, built, developed and significantly improved the perception and capabilities of Russell Roads by recruiting and securing highly skilled and experienced people, investing into industry-leading technology, plant and machinery and diversifying Russell Roads’ offering to the market to allow them to compete and secure work on both a local and national level. A part of this ‘step-change’ was the acquisition and founding of both the Asphalt Plant and Operational Quarries that are strategically scattered across the East Cape of the North Island.

In November 2019, Robbie and Michelle purchased Russell Roads outright. The completion of this purchase meant that they could begin mobilising the greater vision that they had for the company and its people.

‘For The Road Ahead’ is the governing statement that outlines their intention for the profits and success that this business generates. Robbie and Michelle see Russell Roads as a vehicle to pave the way for the people of this company; fruitful careers, health and well-being, prosperity for Whānau and a safe and enjoyable workplace are all targets that they invest a portion of the profits into to ensure the Russell Roads Community will flourish for years to come.

Stuart McKinnon

CEO

Stuart’s background is 35 years in Banking, leading people, matching future needs of customers through innovation and implementing cool ideas.

His last three years have been supporting SBS Bank in their approach to being good for members, and different to the big banks. The 10 years before that he spent driving productivity and creating capacity in CBA and ASB by creating smarter processes to improve service, and lower operating costs in the Contact Centre, Digital space. Before that, he spent 10 years running a contact centre in NZ in Banking and Finance whilst also leading BankDirect for two years.

Stu’s passion to look after the greater good of the people and the planet is something that strongly aligned with Michelle and Robbie’s overall vision for Russell Roads. Stu is striving to find and develop the right balance and sustainability of our business across our people, planet and profits.

Andrew Shannon

General Manager - Russell Roads
Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Hon), Diploma in Business

A professional, organised and talented civil engineer, Andrew is experienced in managing large scale and complex civil projects both locally and abroad. Having completed numerous high profile multi-million dollar projects Andrew is a detailed planner with sound time management skills and a proven ability to deliver projects on time, on budget and to client expectation.

Andrew leads our construction team, in which he sets exceedingly high standards for, and has an exceptional ability to understand and interpret contract requirements and specifications in all aspects of the work that we tender for and win.

Our Contract Managers are developed and mentored by Andrew on a daily basis. He is responsible for their performance and the performance of the contracts that they work on.

Andrew is an ‘overachiever’ in many arenas. He’s ‘not too bad’ with a hockey stick, playing at premier level in Hawke’s Bay and is the super-coach of two of his children’s primary school teams.

Craig Jermyn

Commercial Manager

Craig has been apart of the Russell Roads team since 2015 and continues to actively lead our team to achieve the results sought by our clients which are to be safely delivered in full, to high-quality standards, on time and on budget.

Craig has been a part of the Russell Roads team since 2015 and continues to actively lead our team to achieve the results sought by our clients which are to be safely delivered in full, to high-quality standards, on time and on budget.

Craig is responsible for managing the performance of our projects, as well as being responsible for tendering for our future work. He has over 25 years of experience in the civil construction industry, managing projects across New Zealand. He has proven expertise in road maintenance, reseals, AWPT, bridge maintenance, structural maintenance and drainage projects.

Craig can often be found at the Streetwise Coffee trailer in Hastings or cruising around NZ campsites in his caravan with his wife and son during the summer months.

Jimmy Scott

GM Operations

Jimmy is a process-driven manager with a strong focus on managing resources efficiently and ensuring we have the talent to match the work required of us.

Jimmy is a process-driven manager with a strong focus on managing resources efficiently and ensuring we have the talent to match the work required of us.

Jimmy is dynamic and has an excellent ability to think on his feet and balance the operational requirements for multiple projects, over 100 fleet vehicles and our staff members. He is proficient in matching people with the right positions within the field, dependant on their skills and experience. He encourages and develops those who are new to the business.

Jimmy also contributes to the running, sales and production in our asphalt plant and quarries which are both roles that are likely to experience huge growth in 2021 and 2022.

Jimmy and his wife Jess run a well-oiled system at home parenting four awesome kids. Jimmy is a keen hunter and often gets hit-up by staff to take them on hunting trips.

Sharon Smith

CFO

Sharon oversees the financial performance of the business and ensures the management team has up to date and accurate information to make sound financial decisions.

Sharon oversees the financial performance of the business and ensures the management team has up to date and accurate information to make sound financial decisions. With her previous experience consulting to clients within a leading CA firm, Sharon plays an integral role in strategic and business planning to maintain Russell Roads’ competitiveness.

She is an experienced advisor in budgeting and forecasting and works with businesses on a monthly basis to help them set and achieve their business KPIs and wider business goals.

Sharon is not only an astute accountant but also doubles as a great people manager of her husband and three children. We have been lucky to have Sharon’s experience and financial prowess in the business since 2015.

Josh Paku

Senior Contracts Manager

Josh is the Senior Contracts Manager at Russell Roads and is responsible for the development and delivery of projects run by our Junior Project Managers as well the delivery of his own contracts.

Josh is the Senior Contracts Manager at Russell Roads and is responsible for the development and delivery of projects run by our Junior Project Managers as well the delivery of his own contracts. He has worked in the industry for 10 years, the first two years of this period being in the field learning the ‘ins-and-outs’ of Civil Construction as a machine operator and labourer, building the foundation of knowledge that Josh has today.

Josh is a genuine and exciting talent within this industry, having already worked on multi-million dollar projects at such a young age. We have enjoyed having Josh in the Russell Roads uniform since the start of 2020 and look forward to seeing the waves he will create in the industry for many years to come.

Poppi Tucker-Low

Poppi joined the Russell Roads family in 2019, with a fresh and dynamic perspective on modern marketing and an authentic approach to internal and external communication. She has been in the Marketing/Sales space in a range of positions since 2015.

Poppi is responsible for providing day-to-day support to the Owners (Robbie and Michelle Gale), as well as managing, developing and promoting the Russell Road brand within the various markets and communities that we operate in.

She has shown a huge passion for people, creativity and solidifying ‘The Russell Roads Difference’.
